Open Source Beehives is a citizen science project developed by a team of ecologists, beekeepers, makers, engineers, and open source advocates who want to solve the colony collapse issue.  Currently raising funds on Indiegogo, it enables people to download and print a beehive for their own garden.

Contributions from the Indiegogo campaign will help the team develop sensors to enhance the hives, connecting them to the Internet to log data about what is to blame for the bees’ dwindling population around the world.

For $15 you can get the design files, a PDF project manual and resources to find a local place to print a beehive. It’s $300 for a beehive made from eco-plywood and a limited edition manual, and $600 to join the beta tester’s network and receive an engraved beehive plus the sensor kit.
