The History of Typography, in Stop-Motion ‘Tactile’ Animation

Designer Ben Barrett-Forest created a fun video describing the history of typography. The video features cute hand-cut letters moving about the screen in a lively manner, and walks viewers through the a rather interesting story of font from Guttenberg’s printing press to computers in just over five minutes.

Barrett-Forest describes himself as a bit of a “type nerd” who caught “typography fever” about two years ago during a design class at McCaster University. He describes the particular design choice of using the memorable and unique cut-out shapes as a way to offer a tactile and unrefined viewing experience.

In his interview with The Atlantic, Barrett-Forest answers questions about the video project as well as his own favorite typefaces, and which ones he’s grown tired of over the years.
